Fly-By Sci-Fi

NEWS: Fly-By Sci-Fi is a writing contest for flash fiction with a sci-fi theme, to benefit Up Center Books. Stories of 500 words or less, written by youths and adults around Norfolk, VA, will be submitted for judging, and the contest will culminate with an event at Up Center Books. Up Center Books is not your ordinary bookstore. It's also a workforce readiness program that offers comprehensive support to hard-to-employ adults, and 100% of their sales go to fund their job training program. Here's a bit more about this organization:

ENTRY FORM: You can find the entry form here. It's a Google document to print and fill out. There you will find all the information you need about getting your submission in to the judges. Entries will be accepted by Up Center Books via mail or drop-off between May 1 and June 15.

ENTRY FEE: The fee to enter the contest is $5, which will go directly to Up Center Books as a donation. You may submit a check via mail or bring cash directly to the bookstore. You may submit multiple stories, with a separate entry fee and entry form for each.

CATEGORIES: There are two age categories: 18 and over, and 17 and under. Use your age on July 10, 2013.

STORIES: Stories should be no longer than 500 words, and should be submitted typed, double spaced, and in 12 point font. They should be submitted with a title but no name, as judging will be blind and entries will be sorted by number, using the entry form.

JUDGING: The first round of judging will be carried out by instructors from our sponsoring organization, The Muse Writers Center. The final round will be judged by Lydia Netzer, author of the novel Shine Shine Shine, a New York Times Notable Book of 2012, a People Magazine People's Pick, and shortlisted for the LA Times Book Prize in Fiction. Lydia has written a helpful essay about writing flash fiction -- here it is on her blog, and here is a printer-friendly version of it for use in the classroom -- check it out for inspiration.

PRIZES: The prize in each category will be a free class at The Muse Writers Center in Norfolk. Winners will also be invited to share the microphone with Lydia Netzer to read their work to an audience during an event at Up Center Books to launch the paperback edition of Shine Shine Shine. This event will be Wednesday, July 10th, and there will be a reception afterward.

If you have any questions about the contest, the judging, the entry form, or other matters, contact Lisa Hartz at The Muse Writers Center.
